Manjusri Enters the Gate

One day as Manjusri stood outside the gate, the Buddha called to him, "Manjusri, Manjusri, why do you not enter?" Manjusri replied, "I do not see myself as outside. Why enter?"

curiousity is the key to exploratory writing

tropes of exploration

*outer space/inner space (and the re-negotiation of these and other boundaries)

*restraint and balance (mantra: don't just debate...dissipate!)

topoi of exploration

"topoi," or "commonplaces," are the patterns that arrange and organize a composition.

We will experiment with these and other topoi of written explorations:

*causal composition: exploring ideas/issues/places/futures/etc often proceeds by relating information concerning cause and effect. This kind of writing builds on narrative (sequencing events/happenings) and definitional tactics (providing examples, establishing core concepts/categories, defining boundaries and anomalies). Important: prolepsis, counterargument, multiple perspectives/stakeholders

*description, derive, interviewing

*introspection

For Wed 10 February, read&write:

chapter 5: writing to explore. Find examples of exploratory writing in our unit one polished drafts or process work. In a blog, analysize and make a connection between a point made in this chapter and an example of 1102:isahappening writing. Already, examples abound that connect to "writing scenario 4" on page 135. Tag your post "writing to explore"

chapter 17 : browse for examples of or opportunities multimedia in your writing and on our wiki, cue up and "do up" a remix (see below)

For Wed 10 February, read&write some more

remixing peer writing: select one or several narratives/defintions from unit 1 (or from elsewhere) and perform a simple but bold remix. Remixing includes but is not limited to the following "disciplined actions" (Cage): shifting/substituting/juxtaposing/adding/subtracting/combining content, form, ideas, syntax, media, audience

analog/digital: 'zines, video, sound

visualizations and representations of the writing process: drawings, images, films, and sounds
